We are proud to announce that the 80 MW / 200 MWh “Songino” Battery Energy Storage Station has successfully completed a black start test, proving its ability to restore the Central Energy System from a complete shutdown.

Completed Successfully:
Self-started and powered its own internal loads autonomously
Energized the 220/110/35 kV Songino Substation, connecting the BESS to the grid
Verified readiness to start TG-4 of TPP-4 power plant from both hot and cold standby via the 220 kV, approximately 20 km overhead transmission line

While the Turbine Generaor-4 start-up was not performed due to current conditions, full technical readiness has been achieved—ensuring we can respond quickly in emergency situations.

This achievement highlights the advanced technical complexity and strategic importance of black start capability:

Technical Difficulty: Black start operations require precise control and seamless coordination to safely energize the grid without an external power supply. The battery system must reliably self-start, power its own internal loads, and progressively energize downstream substations and transmission lines. This test confirms that the system meets these demanding technical requirements under national and international conditions.

Special Significance: The black start capability provided by the Songino BESS adds a vital layer of resilience to Mongolia’s Energy System infrastructure. It ensures rapid restoration of electricity following a total grid failure, minimizing downtime and economic loss. This is especially critical during Mongolia’s harsh winter, when a shutdown of thermal power plants would interrupt heating supply and pose a serious risk of freezing in Ulaanbaatar. The battery storage system’s fast response and flexibility significantly enhance grid stability and emergency preparedness.
